This month the long process of creating an improvement plan for each of our schools will begin.
A School Council has been formed at each school; that council is composed of the principal, some staff members, parents, and community members. These councils will meet at least once per month, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of their school and discussing new and better ways to do things. By May, each council will have written a “school improvement plan” that must be presented and accepted by our School Committee. This plan sets the goals for the following year and recommends strategies needed to reach those goals—although mandated by the state several years ago, these councils work effectively here in Clinton because people care and are willing to help.
Last month the School Committee learned all about the parent volunteer program started recently. There are now over 220 parents volunteering at the Clinton Elementary School!! A similar program has started at the middle school and, I hope, will eventually grow to the high school level later on. Now THAT’S parental involvement!!
Two of my own personal goals this year are increasing parental involvement in our schools and better communication in general. I wish to thank all of the parents who are helping us to reach our goals. Please continue your involvement—ask the tough questions of our administrators, speak up, be heard, and then offer your services to help us be a better school district.
